2. Why "sink or swim" is a good leadership style but not a motivator with Elio Leoni-Sceti, co-founder at the Craftory.
Welcome to episode 2 of my new podcast for first-time leaders where my guest is Elio Leoni-Sceti .
Elio talks about what he looks for in leaders… "intellectual curiosity, positivity and a desire to develop talent, to truly make people better." And that even those with high potential, the thing that limits them is often “their own awareness of how good they are”.
We look at a) what it takes to succeed in corporate vs the founder world and b) what you should ask yourself if you considering making the move. As a founder it all falls to you – the vision, the resource allocation and motivating others, and you need to sure you can play all 3 roles. On top, as part of a founding team, you need to be able to delegate more than ever.
And whilst great leaders combine emotional intelligence with inspiring business leadership, this is a rare combination in practice so you need to be willing to seek it out from multiple sources.
We discuss his attitude to Sink or Swim and how it has evolved. “It’s a good leadership style but not a good motivator… you need to make people believe it so they prepare their best… but you need to provide a net of support”
