1. Why Recruiting Externally is akin to an Organ Transplant with Alastair Paton from August Leadership

We talk about why hiring a leader externally is more analogous to an organ transplant for an organisation than we might realise. In both cases, the stakes are high and the success rates are moderate.

Alastair talks about unrealistic expectations a) on the client side, that they expect a super hero, better than everyone internally, and b) on the candidate side the belief that the trajectory they have been on in their previous company is going to continue. They don’t appreciate the cultural factors which make the difference in whether you succeed or not

And with the drive for more diverse candidates who by definition won´t all think the same way or respond to the same management styles, the integration challenge is going to get harder.

So why is the ball dropped?
Some organisations take the view that if they have hired the best, they just need to press play, and the idea that you need to invest to nurture “the implant” is alien.

And what can be done?

The best organisations recognise the need for external support and
in America, they are willing to invest significantly in specialists to increase the chances of success.
