Moment of Truth #2 - Making a Good First Impression

MOT #2 is about recognising 2 facts

1. You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression, and

2. In 75% of cases “success or failure during the first few months is a strong predictor of overall success or failure in the job”, (Watkins, “The first 90 days”). That´s why it’s vital to have a transition plan.

While this may sound banal and another checklist exercise, it should be anything but. When developing your plan, there are a few elements to consider

1. It needs to be driven by you, not your boss or HR. After all, the stakes are highest for you!

2. It should be aligned with your boss, the individual who will have the biggest role in your success, and who can help guide you on the areas where “you don’t know what you don’t know”.

3. In terms of content, It needs to be tailored to you and your role, and will be an output of MOT #1, (see previous post).

The transition period can be overwhelming, but having a written 90 day plan will help keep you on track.
